Walk-in service may be available but appointments receive priority. You can book appointments online through the county clerk website.
Both parties must appear together in person with valid photo ID. California law requires joint appearance for marriage license applications. You cannot apply by mail or online for the license itself. Some counties let you start an application online but you must finish in person. Bring a driver license, passport, state ID, or military ID. The ID must show your photo, birth date, and be current.
Applying for Your Marriage License
Complete the online application before your appointment if Riverside County offers this service. The form asks for names, addresses, birth dates, birth places, and parents' information. If either party was married before, provide the date the previous marriage ended and how it ended. Some counties want to see your divorce decree or death certificate if your last marriage ended recently. Call ahead to ask what documents you need to bring.
No residency requirement exists in California. You do not need to live in Riverside County or California to get married here. Any county in the state can issue your license. The license is valid for 90 days from the date of issuance. You can use it anywhere in California. There is no waiting period. You can marry the same day you get your license if you want.
Marriage license fees vary by county. Check the Riverside County fee schedule before you visit. Fees can change based on state legislation. Certified copies of marriage certificates cost $19 each as of January 2026. This fee increased by $2 under Assembly Bill 64 which took effect at the start of 2026.
Public Versus Confidential Marriage Licenses
California law provides two types of marriage licenses with different privacy rules. Public marriage licenses are the standard option most couples choose. These become public records after the county recorder registers them. Anyone can request a certified copy. The license requires at least one witness at the ceremony. You may have up to two witnesses sign. The county recorder keeps public marriage records and issues copies to requesters.
Confidential marriage licenses offer complete privacy. Both parties must be 18 or older. Minors cannot get confidential licenses. The couple must be living together as spouses when they apply. You sign an affidavit about this. No witnesses are required at the ceremony. The record stays private under California Family Code sections 500 through 511. Only the married parties can get copies unless a court orders otherwise. The county clerk maintains confidential records separately from public ones.
Once you choose a license type, you cannot change it later. A confidential license stays confidential forever. Consider your needs carefully. Many couples who want privacy or are remarrying pick confidential licenses. The county clerk can explain the differences when you apply.
Marriage Ceremony Options
Riverside County offers civil ceremonies at its office locations. You can schedule a ceremony when you apply for your license or arrange it later. The county charges a ceremony fee separate from the license fee. Civil ceremonies are simple legal proceedings. They fulfill the legal requirement but are not fancy events. You can bring a small number of guests.
You may arrange a private ceremony instead with any officiant authorized by California law. Authorized officiants include priests, ministers, rabbis, judges, retired judges, court commissioners, and people authorized by religious groups. The officiant does not need to register with the county first. They must sign the license after your ceremony. They have 10 days to return the completed license to the county recorder office.
After the county records your license, it becomes a marriage certificate. You can then order certified copies. The officiant returns the license to the county. Do not expect the officiant to give you a copy. You must request copies from the county yourself.
Getting Copies of Marriage Certificates
Certified copies cost $19 each as of 2026. You can request copies in person at any Riverside County office, by mail, or online through VitalChek. In-person requests may get same-day service if the record is available. Mail requests take 2 to 3 weeks. VitalChek orders include extra service fees but may process faster than mail.
Public marriage records allow anyone to request an informational copy. These are marked "INFORMATIONAL, NOT A VALID DOCUMENT TO ESTABLISH IDENTITY." You cannot use them for legal purposes. To get an authorized certified copy for things like name changes, you must be a party to the marriage, a close relative, or have a court order. This rule comes from California Health and Safety Code section 103526. Authorized copy requests need a notarized sworn statement.
Confidential marriage certificates go only to the married parties. Even parents cannot get them. A court order is the only exception. Riverside County keeps these records separate. The privacy is permanent.
Record Amendments and Other Services
If your marriage certificate has an error or you want to add a name change, you must contact the California Department of Public Health Vital Records division. Riverside County cannot amend public marriage records. The state handles amendments. Forms and fees are on the CDPH Vital Records website. Amendments in the first year are free to file but you pay for certified copies. After one year, the fee is $26 including one amended copy.
Riverside County keeps records only for marriages where the license was bought in Riverside County. If you married in another county, contact that county's recorder. The state has some marriage records for certain years but county offices are usually faster. For marriages that happened in Riverside County, the county recorder is your best source.
VitalChek offers online ordering for Riverside County certificates. The service adds handling fees to the county's $19 certificate cost. Processing through VitalChek may be quicker than mail but not as fast as in-person service. Visit vitalchek.com and select Riverside County to order online.
