Vista Marriage Records
Vista marriage records are maintained by San Diego County offices. Cities in California do not issue marriage licenses independently. All marriage licensing and vital records services for Vista residents are handled at the county level. San Diego County operates the Recorder-County Clerk office where couples apply for marriage licenses and obtain certified copies of marriage certificates. Vista residents use these county facilities along with other residents throughout San Diego County for all marriage-related services and document requests. The county has offices at 1600 Pacific Highway in San Diego and in Kearny Mesa.

Public and Confidential Marriage Licenses
California offers two types of marriage licenses. Public marriage licenses become part of the public record once registered with the county. Anyone can request certified copies of public marriage certificates. These records are searchable by the general public. Public licenses require at least one witness to sign at the wedding ceremony. A second witness signature is optional but not required.
Confidential marriage licenses stay private under California Family Code sections 500 through 511. Only the married parties can obtain copies of confidential marriage certificates unless a court orders otherwise. No witnesses are required at the ceremony for confidential marriages. These records are not open to public inspection. Employers, family members, or anyone else cannot request copies of confidential marriage records.
The choice between public and confidential affects who can access your record later. Public records are searchable by anyone with an interest. Confidential records stay private forever under California law. This privacy protection is permanent. Both license types have the same legal effect on your marriage. The only difference is privacy and public access.
Obtaining Marriage Certificates
After your wedding, the person who performed your marriage ceremony must return the completed license to San Diego County within 10 days. This is required under California Family Code section 359. The officiant fills in ceremony details and obtains required signatures. For public marriages, at least one witness must sign. You do not automatically receive a copy of your marriage certificate after the ceremony.
Allow 10 business days from the time the marriage license was returned to the office for registration before requesting a copy of the marriage certificate. The county needs time to process and record your marriage before copies become available. If you request a copy too soon, the record may not yet be in the system.
Certified copies cost $19 each as of January 2026. This fee increased by $2 under Assembly Bill 64 which took effect at the start of 2026. The county will retain the non-refundable fee for processing your application even if no record is found. If no record is found based on the information provided on your application, a Letter of No Record will be issued instead of a certificate.
Order copies in person, by mail, or through VitalChek online. For in-person requests at the main Pacific Highway office, you must sign the application in the presence of the County Clerk. Bring valid photo identification that matches the name on the marriage record. Mail orders require a check or money order payable to San Diego Recorder/County Clerk. Do not send cash. For VitalChek online orders, select San Diego County Recorder and Authorized Copy to receive certified copies. Credit or debit card payments in person have an additional $2.50 surcharge per transaction.
State Records Access
The California Department of Public Health keeps marriage records for select years. The state has public marriage records from 1905 to 2001 and from 2010 to the present. CDPH does not maintain confidential marriage records at all under state policy. State processing times average 5 to 7 weeks according to CDPH. San Diego County provides much faster service.
Vista residents typically use the county office for quicker results. The county processes requests within days or weeks compared to months at the state level. Use the state office only if you cannot visit the county or need records from specific years when county records are not easily accessible. The county recommends using local offices when possible for faster turnaround times.
